Anti Bark Collars – How do they work?
As with everything, it pays to get a bit of information before buying an anti bark collar for your pet. Which type of collar is best for your dog? What are your choices? Do all barking dogs need an anti bark collar?.
Types of anti bark dog collars
There are three methods that are used for anti bark collars: citrus spray, sonic or ultrasonic (or vibration), and electrical. All of which are safe and perfectly harmless to use while you’re training your pet to reduce barking.
The spray collar will spray the muzzle of the dog whenever it starts to bark, Because dogs hate the smell of citrus, they want to stop being sprayed with the citrus smell. These collars will hiss before releasing the spray, so that dogs learn to stop the barking in order to save themselves from the unpleasant odor.
The second type of collars use sound. These collars emit a very high pitched sound that humans can’t hear but dogs can; just like on TV. Over time, the dog is annoyed or distracted by the high pitched tone to stop barking.
Finally, anti bark collars for dogs that are electrical give a small electrical shock to a dog every time it barks. The shock is very mild, comparable to the one you’d get if you walked on a thick carpet. It doesn’t hurt – but you also don’t want to repeat it anytime soon!.
Other Things To Consider?
There are even some collars that use more than one of the mentioned anti barking methods. For instance, they might release a citrus spray, emit a sound, or both, whenever the dog barks.
There are some models that let you adjust how strong the stimulus is. It would use a quiet sound, or lower levels of shock, etc. You can increase them for better results or reduce them as your dog becomes more obedient. This will allow you to get to a level that will call the attention of your dog without stressing it. Eventually, the dog will stop the bad behaviour on its own, given enough time.
Before buying an anti bark collar, know your options. Collars can work by using citronella spray, sonic or ultrasonic sounds, or electronic shocking. All types are safe for your dog, and they will keep the barking to a minimum.
