A quality dog food will contain around 25% protein and 20% oils and fats.Make sure the protein is of a high quality. Some dogs such as puppies, large breeds, and active breeds have different protein and fat requirements. Make sure to discuss this with your veterinarian to ensure proper feeding of your dog.If you want to make a solid, informed decision you need to understand which ingredients are better than others. Check the label for the following ingredients: Quality beef, lamb, turkey, chicken and fish plus vegetable oil and rice.The first four ingredients should not include any grains but should be made up of meat. Chicken is fine for dogs but be cautious if chicken is the main ingredient.By simply listing “Chicken” many manufacturers will actually include the beak, feet and even feathers.
Quality dog food will also include vitamins and fatty acids. Omega 6 and 3 plus Vitamin E are great examples of these.Avoid any foods that show a long list of preservatives.There are a number of other ingredients which you should try and avoid or keep to a minimum including wheat, soy, cereals, corn and chicken by-products.
