Tuxedo is adorable and such a loving little guy. During his younger days, he was very active and seemed to enjoy the training that we did together, including running and going through tunnels. Aside from being adorable, Tuxedo gave me feats since he was such a pro at making messes and destroying things at my apartment such as couch pillows, designer shoes, expensive throw rugs. Just name it. If it was within Tuxedo’s reach or he was able to jump onto a piece of furniture and make it within his reach, he attacked it. Pet Chiropractic

It was only after Tuxedo destroyed a very sentimental item from my childhood that I sat down at the computer to look for answers online. What makes this dog to be hyper? What torments this little soul to come up with such messes each day and cost me so much? I have been wishing peacefulness and sense of calm for Tuxedo.

Then, he did calm down a bit as Tuxedo grows older. But then, he appears to pick up a new trouble. I noticed symptoms of Tuxedo having stiff joints. I sat down at the computer again, searching further for a list of signs and symptoms that might give me a firm answer since I wasn’t sure if he was in pain or not. I hated the idea of him being in pain and wanted to do whatever I could do make sure he was comfortable.

Tuxedo’s stiffness left trouble getting around. He was not able to maneuver the small set of doggy steps next to my bed to reach his favorite spot to nap in the sunshine during the day. I wondered if he might be depressed and it broke my heart.

Then I find myself researching online again. Sure beats the old days where we were limited to whatever we might find in our local libraries! I found Midwest Microcurrent, a veterinary clinic that incorporates electronic current (also known as cranial electrotherapy stimulation) to lessen or eliminate many symptoms that pets might suffer from while searching for what might be troubling Tuxedo and how we could resolve the issues,

Our initial appointment with Dr. Ava Frick and her team provided a diagnosis of canine arthritis and depression for Tuxedo. While I was alarmed to hear this, I was also relieved to know that, with diagnosis in hand, we were ready to move forward on a journey toward healing.

Dr. Frick explained that, once we began Alpha-Stim microcurrent treatments at her office, I could continue Tuxedo’s treatment sessions at home by purchasing our own Alpha-Stim machine. This will free me from the one-hour drive to the clinic each day.

I credit Dr. Frick and the staff at Midwest Microcurrent for bringing the old Tuxedo back to me. Pet Arthritis

Being a huge movie buff, one of my all-time favorite teen flicks being “Clueless” starring Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, who later went on to “Friends” and other movies, and Brittarny Murphy. Last December, I was definitely stunned by the news about Brittany Murphy’s sudden death. Animal Chiropractic

My heart went out to her mother and her husband, Simon Monjack, as they laid her to rest, following her funeral, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California. The 32-year old actress had a heart attack, which caused her death at their shared home with her husband in LA on December 20, 2009, as stated by the news reports.

I saw breathtaking photos that Simon had taken of Brittany as I clicked on her husband’s web site. Such a shame for someone so beautiful and talented to be taken from us too soon.

Aside from the tragic loss of her family and fans, what truly broke my heart was when I learned of Brittany’s female Maltese named Clara. Being an animal lover, I cried when I read online from people magazine’s web site that the dog was experiencing a change in behavior since Brittany’s death, according to Brittany’s husband.

Simon Monjack was quoted in People magazine, saying, “One of the saddest things is that Clara has looked everywhere for Brittany and can’t find her,” and “Clara, she looked in every place Brittany could be, she couldn’t understand why Brittany was not in bed or in the bathroom, and she looked in every inch of the house.” Brittany named her after silent film star Clara Bow and was reported as describing Clara as “a humongous personality in a tiny package. More than a pet, she is a family member.

I had never really given it much thought, but this tragic turn of events made me wonder how pets react to their owner’s death. Do pets know how to mourn? If so, how do survivors help the pet’s physical and emotional health during the mourning period?

My pet’s veterinarian, Dr.Ava Frick, is a specialist in pet behavior. In fact, she has been using Alpha Stim technology treatments on one of my dogs due to problems with his excessive barking and showing aggression toward my other two dogs.

At our next appointment, Dr.Frick and I discussed Clara and pets’ ability to mourn. She said that it is common for a dog to go through a mourning period after the loss of a human or animal companion. In fact, the symptoms can be exhibited for days or even weeks afterwards, including decreased appetite, lethargy, and changes in the dog’s behavior.

She said that it is important to keep a dog in its normal routine in such cases. Exercise can do wonders to relieve stress for pets as with humans who are going through issues. Being with familiar people, and even meeting a few new friendly faces, can boost the pet’s mood, as well.

It is a wise move to seek for professional advice if the pet’s mourning period seems to carry on. Your veterinarian can identify Physiologic abnormalities, which might be contributing to the dog’s depression.

Dogs who are mourning and experiencing depression often respond well to complementary and alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, herbal supplements, and dietary modification. Dog Pain Relief

I was concerned about my five-year-old Maltese, Heidi, because her skin seemed dry and flaky, and her coat did not seem as full and silky as usual. Initially, I was not that troubled much for I thought it was just because of the dryness in the house during the winter months. But it did not clear up. Actually, it even got worse. Pet Pain Relief

Heidi sleeps next to me every night but her irritation reached the point that she scratch so intensely and wake me up. When your baby is suffering in pain, it is really difficult to get a full-night’s sleep.

Dr. Ava Frick, our veterinarian asked me if I might possibly be bathing Heidi too often or using the wrong shampoo during Heidi’s appointment when I mentioned about her irritation. Although both are common reasons for a dog to incur skin irritation, but I use a very mild shampoo and do not bathe Heidi that often.

As I am diligent about preventing fleas from ever becoming a problem, it is out of the question. She only goes outside to play a bit each day and relieve herself and I am cautious enough to have the yard treated in order to prevent fleas.

Having those possibilities ruled out, Dr. Frick and I had an interesting discussion regarding how essential fatty acids are necessary to a dog’s healthy coat. Although I thought I was making the best choices when purchasing her food and treats, I was quite worried about the possibility of Heidi having deficiency in her diet.

I have learned that healthy fats are essential in keeping a dog’s coat in good shape. The proper nutrients to support healthy skin and coat is not provided by low-quality commercial dog food. Improperly balanced homemade dog foods often lack proper nutrition.

Omega-3 also provides benefits to dog’s skin for its anti-inflammatory effects. They are beneficial to dogs with allergies or other inflammatory skin diseases. They are great since they can also lessen itchiness as most dogs irritate their skin by excessive scratching.

Dr Frick suggested some changes to Heidi’s diet, including the addition of supplements. She said that I should start to see some improvement in Heidi’s skin and coat within about six weeks of starting Omega-3 supplementation, and she was exactly right.

My dog’s skin and coat are prettier than ever. Best of all, Heidi no longer deals with irritation that led her to excessive scratching. Animal Chiropractic
